Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Thomas John BALL of Lismore, NSW

Military Cross Award

"On 15th July 1945, Lieutnant C.H. Ball, of 2/6 Australian Commando Squadron, 2/7th Australian Cavalry Commando Regiment, commanded an outpost on an important approach to the enemy front line North-East of BALIKPAPAN. On five occasions, this outpost was attacked by direct assault and by infiltration by a numerically superior enemy force.  Each attach was repulsed mainly as a result of Lieut Ball's coolness and leadership,  Exposed to enemy fire, he constantly moved about amont his men, encouraging and directing them.  Subsequently, he organised and led several offensive sorties to destroy enemy pockets of them.  After the action, 17 enemy dead were counted in the vicinity of the post, and it is known that, in addition, a number were wounded.  The enemy's failure to achieve his purpose, and his ultimate withdrawal after suffering heavy casualties, can be attributed in no small measure to Lieut. Ball's aggressive and determined leadership, his outstanding personal courage, and his devotion to duty."
