Burney enlisted in to the Australian Imperial Force at Adelaide on the 31.1.17, he then enbarked for active service on the 23.6.17. Burney strated driving tanks for the 3rd Army Tank brigade on the 25.8.17. He was then admitted to the Fargo Mil Hospital on the 3.9.17 for influenza and stayed there for 8 days and then went back to driving tanks. After driving tanks for another 3 months he got charged for away without leave and was sentenced to undergo detention for 86 days and total forf 143 days pay. 2 months later he finished his detention. Once he got out of detention he returned to Australia per the "Durham Castle" for discharge and dislocating his shoulder. He then disembarked at Melbourne. Two weeks later on the 27.5.18 he officially got discharged with a disability from the Australian Imperial Force at Adelaide,He died on 22 February 1951 aged 64 years of age in South Australia. he earned the 1914 - 15 star, the Victory Medal, and the British War Medal.
