Sergeant Gordon Harold Forbes Bartlett (Service Nos:QX4390/15054) initially served in the AIF as a Private attached to 6th Division Ammunition Sub Park from 22 October 1939, discharging on 6 May 1940 'conditional to transfer to RAAF' (NAA). Aircraftman I Bartlett enlisted in the RAAF at Ingleburn NSW - mustered as Trainee Technical and re mustered as Fitter. LAC Forbes was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1942, and was attached to 22 Squadron and 14 Aircraft Repair Depot (ARD), before posting in 1943 to the Northern Territory, where he served on Mellingimbie Island, Gorrie and Batchelor with 59 Operational Base Unit (OBU) and 18 Squadron. Sergeant Bartlett was in Madang in 1945 with AFHQ Forward Echelon, and was attached to Forward Echelon (DTS) at Discharge on 14 February 1946. In 1949 his application for re enlistment in the RAAF was rejected on the basis fo Defective Colour Vision (NAA).
Gordon was born in Rockhampton, QLD in 1914, only child of James Stanley Forbes Bartlett (b1884 in Brisbane, QLD) and Catherine May Hillcoat (b1885 in Widgee via Gympie, QLD). James qualified as a Chemist in Sydney, worked as a Teacher in Brisbane, and was a Public Servant - Inspector with the State Children's Department - when he and Catherine married in 1911 in Gladstone, QLD. In 1907 James was also a Lieutenant with the Commonwealth Cadet Corps, and he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916. Lieutenant Bartlett was KiA at Pozieres on 25 July 1916. Catherine then lived in Townsville, Brisbane, Barcaldine and Esk, where she raised her son and worked as a Dental Assistant and School Matron.
Gordon started work as a Jackeroo in Barcaldine before commencing work in Esk with the Dairy Co Operative in 1932. Initially an Engineer's Assistant, he became a Refrigeration Mechanic and Dairy Equipment Engineer. In 1939 when he enlisted in the Army, Gordon was an Engine Driver in charge of machinery in the Butter Factory. Following his Discharge from the RAAF in 1946, Gordon returned to Esk and worked as an Engine Driver with the Dairy Co Op. In the early 1950s he moved to Nundah in Brisbane, and was working as an Engineer/Fitter in 1960 when he married Edith Jean Furner (b1925 in Mitchell, QLD) - Edith was a Clerk in Nundah. Gordon and Edith settled in Redcliffe, where they raised their family and Gordon worked as a Fitter before retiring to Caboolture. Gordon died in 2004 and Edith in 2013.
