Sergeant Walker James Stephen Bartlett (Service No:QX29390) enlisted in the AIF on 27 December 1941 as a Private with AASC Training Depot, and in March 1942 was attached to 2/16 Light Field Ambulance. Corporal Bartlett was attached to 7 Port Craft Coy RAE on 29 March 1944 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Lae on board the Katoomba. Sergeant Bartlett emplaned from Lae for the RTA on 16 March 1945, and was attached to 12 Australian Small Ships Coy, Bribie Battery during 1945/1946. Sergeant Bartlett was attached to 2/16 Light Field Ambulance at Discharge on 25 September 1946.
Tom was born in Maryborough, QLD in 1907, third of four children of Walker James Bartlett (b1873 in Brisbane, QLD) and Kathleen Mary Josephine Moran (b1873 in Dublin, Ireland). Walker and Kathleen married in Brisbane in 1900, and lived in Maleny, where Walker was a Coffee Planter (Queensland Coffee Plantation), then Rockhampton where Walker was a Draper. By 1912 Walker and Kathleen were settled in Brisbane, where Walker was a Manufacturer before moving to Cairns in 1922. Walker was a Department Manager for Burns Philp & Coy from 1922 to 1928, then Insurance Agent for Woodward & Calder, and later the Agent for TE Thorpe Produce and Merchant Broker. Walker served as Hon Secretary for the Cairns Branch of the Country Party, and was a member of the Cairns Hospitals Board and the Far Northern District Bowling Association.
Tom started work as a Bank Clerk in Mossman QLD, and was a Mercantile Manager in Townsville and Cairns prior to enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge from the Army, Tom was a Storekeeper in Caloundra, and in 1953 in Brisbane married Mildred Betty Moore (b1926 in Brisbane, QLD). Tom and Mildred lived in Nambour, where Tom was a Salesman, before settling in Caloundra in the 1960s. Tom, a Business Proprietor in Caloundra, died in 1982 and Mildred died in 2011.
