Alexander Bates
Alexander George Bates was born on 25th December, 1918 in Proserpine to Harry George Bates & Eliza Streeton. He attended Strathdickie School and later worked as a farm labourer.
He served 209 days in the Middle East & returned to Australia 28.3.1942 for further retraining for jungle warfare. They left Australia for Milne Bay, New Guinea on 7.8.1942. He served 509 days in New Guinea, from Buna, Sandanda and Port Moresby. He suffered from malaria & needed his appendix removed.
He married Jean Ella Cavanagh & they had 4 children. He worked for P.M.G. (Telstra) in Rockhampton & Proserpine, also the Proserpine Sugar Mill.
