Youngest of two brothers who served in WWII, Private William Thomas Bates (Service No:Q106697) enlisted in the ACMF on 18 December 1941 and served with 47 Infantry Battalion in New Guinea (21 January 1943 - 28 May 1944) and Bougainville (3 December 1944 - 28 November 1945). Private Bates was attached to 47 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 11 December 1945.
Bill was born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1919, youngest of five children of Henry Bates (b1884 in Bundaberg, QLD) and Ada Jacobena Carlsson (b1885 in Kalkie via Bundaberg, QLD). Henry worked as a Miner at Gaeta via Bundaberg before he and Ada married in 1907 in Bundaberg. The couple settled in Batesville, Kolan via Bundaberg, where they raised their family and Henry was a Farmer.
Bill was a Sugar Worker and Farmer at Koolboo in Musgrave via Bundaberg when he enlisted in the Army in 1941. Following his Discharge from the Army, Bill returned to Koolboo, where he was a Farmer/Labourer. Bill died in 2003.
