Served in the South African (Boer) War as a Company Sergeant Major S.N. 314, 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen. Prior to his appointment with the 5th QIB he was serving as a Colour Sergeant on the permanent staff of the Qld Defence Force.
He became a career soldier and following his return from South Africa he joined the permanent staff of the Commonwealth Military Forces based in Qld. In 1911 he transferred to Victoria where he served until he was retired due to age in 1933.
