103 years ago today, on the 3rd April 1918, Corporal John Connell, 35th Battalion (Reg No-402), carpenter from Springfield, North Waratah, New South Wales, father of two (John James Rance, died 1977, district unknown, and Leonard), was Killed in Action by a shell burst at Villers-Bretonneux, France, age 44.

Born at Balaklava, Adelaide, South Australia on the 8th December 1873 to Peter and Elizabeth Connell nee Graham; husband of Elsie Gertrude Connell nee Robinson (married 1905, Broken Hill, N.S.W., died 1926, sleeping here) of Toronto, N.S.W. and Young Road, Lambton, N.S.W. and 95 Sunderland Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., John enlisted January 1916 at Rutherford, N.S.W.

John’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Mr Connell has been remembered on the Waratah Park Memorial Gates, Waratah Loyal Rose of Australia Lodge-Manchester Unity Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 4th February 1919, 11 names inscribed, 2 Fallen, whereabouts unknown) and The Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name could possibly have been inscribed on the Newcastle Progressive Carpenters & Joiners Roll of Honour (whereabouts unknown).

The gravesite for John’s wife Elsie is deteriorating (lead lettering has almost disappeared), so I have placed poppies in remembrance of her husband’s supreme sacrifice for God, King and Country. PRESBYTERIAN-6NW. 25.
