Resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
79 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 14th December 1940, Able Seaman Driver George William Burgess (Reg No-1), 1st Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train, painter and greaser (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.), of Little Dennison Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 38 Church Street, Wickham, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. CATHOLIC 1-19. 21.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 30th October 1875 to John and Margaret Jane Burgess; husband of Rebecca Robinna Burgess nee Downie (married 1900, died 1962), George enlisted March 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria.
Returned home 10th July 1917, and was discharged 24th July 1917.
I have not located George’s name on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour, as I am unsure if inscribed on the Carrington Football Club Roll Of Honor.

Alfred (Reg No-381, 34th Bn) and Percy W B (Reg No-4435, 3rd Bn) and Walter John (Reg No-25, 54th Bn) and Hercules Clemens (Reg No-2332, 3rd Bn) are all resting at the cemetery.

The Burgess gravesite has been restored, and I would like to contact descendants for photos and more information on the Burgess brothers.
