Harry Ross Bell
The death of Harry Ross Bell occurred at the Proserpine Nursing Home on Thursday February, 5. 1998, aged 75 years.
He was born in Proserpine January 23, 1923, the youngest of 6 children of Harry & Margaret Johnston. The family lived in Ann Street, Proserpine for a time, before selecting land at Banana Pocket on the O’Connell River for mixed farming & later sugar cane. He completed all his schooling at the small one teacher Banana Pocket Provisional school. After leaving school Mr Bell cut cane by hand on the family farm. As a young man he enjoyed Saturday night dances at the Lethebrook Hall.
He applied to join the Royal Australian Air Force but was rejected as he worked in an essential service.
For many years he worked the crushing season at Proserpine, carting cane or as a fireman on the locos & during the slack season at the Golden Circle Cannery in Brisbane. In 1971 he gained permanent work at the cannery. Retiring in 1988 & returning to Proserpine & bought a house in Faust Street.
