Johannes was the eldest of five children of Johannes Heinrich Bettiens (born 1885 at Walla Scrub, Gin Gin QLD) and Ethel Vharlotte Tobler (born 1894 in Gayndah, QLD). Johannes Snr and Ethel settled at Gin Gin near Bundaberg in QLD where Johannes Snr was a Labourer. 

Johannes Jnr lived in the Gin Gin region and worked as a Labourer. He married Margaret Maiven Williams (born 1915 in Bundaberg, QLD) in 1936 in Bundaberg, QLD. Johannes and Margaret were living in Gin Gin, QLD where Johannes was a Labourer when he enlisted in December 1939 in the Australian Army. He served with 5 Motor Regiment as a Trooper (Q5448) and was Discharged in February 1942.

Johannes' brothers served in the Australian Army in WWII - Raymond (Service No: QX13058) and Astey (Service No: Q42436),

Johannes and Margaret continued living in Gin Gin, QLD where Johannes worked as a Labourer following his Discharge, By 1949, Johannes was working as a Stockman, which he continued until he retired in 1981. He and Margaret remained in Gin Gin and Johannes died in 2008 and Margaret died in 1999
