William was the youngest of four children (and only son) of William Black Snr and Ann Gowland both born in 1865 at Eaglehawk, near Bendigo, Victoria. William Snr and Ann married at Eaglehawk in 1888 and raised their family there before relocating to Diggora, near Echuca in the late 1890s. In the early 1900s the family moved to Melbourne, Victoria.
William was a Clerk in Melbourne in October 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served as a Private (Service No:878) with 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance in Suez before his Discharge in February 1916. Brother-in-Law Will Kitchin (Sergeant; Service No:19608) also served in WWI.
Returning to Melbourne, William worked as a Stoker before marrying Marjorie Georgina Davidson (b1903 in Mt Morgan, QLD) in 1935 in Rockhampton, QLD - Marjorie was a Nurse at Fitzroy, QLD. William and Marjorie lived in Melbourne, Victoria where William was a Fruiterer before relocating to Brisbane, QLD.
In August 1940 William and Marjorie were in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted with the Army (Service No:Q68009). William was a Lieutenant attached to the Australian Army Pay Corps when he was Discharged in 1945. Brother-in-Law Harold William Maurice Walker (Pte; Service No:V365542) also served in WWII.
Moving to Wynnum, QLD following WWII William worked briefly as a Poultry Farmer before returning to Melbourne where he worked as a Clerk. Marjorie continued Nursing in Victoria. Both died in QLD - William in 1962 and Marjorie in 1975.
