James was born at Limivady, Ireland and he enlisted during the First World War with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from Coleraine, Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He embarked for France landing there on 9th December 1915. He was twice decorated with a Military Medal (MM) for Bravery in the field, one while attached to the Light Trench Mortar Battery. At some point after the war he came to Australia and he worked as a Labourer and he lived at Kalbar, Queensland with his wife Margaret Jane Blair, also known as Maggie. During the Second World War he enlisted on 9th July 1940 with the 2nd AIF and he was allocated service number Q187587. James served in Transport units within Australia in Queensland and New South Wales and he was discharged from the 3rd Australian Motar Transport Training Depot on 17th October 1945.
