Military Cross
From the Acting Commander of 2 Anti Tank Regiment:
"I desire to place on record the good work performed by this officer on 15 Jun 41.
At a time when superior enemy forces were attacking, he was sent forward to extricate the guns on the right flank. The enemy held the ridges and were converging on the road.
Lieut. Bolton motor cycled through a barrage of MG and rifle fire. When he could go no further he discarded his bicycle and proceeded on foot, though he was being fired on continuously.
At this time the infantry had been withdrawn and he gave the order to the gun crews to withdraw their guns. Just then a number of tanks appeared on the road and Lieut. Bolton immediately put the guns into action and destroyed three tanks and forced the remainder to withdraw.
By this time the French were between the guns and our forces, and the wheels were riddled with MG bullets, so he rendered the guns useless and led the crews through the enemy lines under cover of darkness.
It is recommended that he be awarded the Military Cross."
