Stuart was the second of five children of Frederick Bowers (born 1873 in Dalby, QLD) and Alice Bertha Crust (born 1867 in Brisbane, QLD). Both his parents were dead by the time Stusrt was 16 Years of age, and he had just turned 18 years of age when he enlisted in Brisbane QLD in the AIF. Stuart served as a Private (Service No: 64326) initially with 6 Reinforcements Egypt and then as a Trooper and Signaller with 2 Light Hosre Regiment.

Following his Discharge in 1919, Stuart enlisted in the RAN and served as a Stoker 2nd Class (Service No: 11896) on HMAS Cerberus until his Discharge in 1920.

Stuart returned to QLD where he worked as a Labopurer in Ipswich, and in 1924 married Olive Brown (born 1902 in Ipswich, QLD). Stuart and Olive lived initially in Wombye in Wide Bay, QLD where Stuart worked as a Farm Labourer before the family moved to One Mile Estate in Ipswich, QLD where Stuart worked as a Labourer. He enlisted in the AMF in 1940, serving as a Private (Service No: Q187563) with 15th Infantry Battalion until his Discharge in 1942.

Stuart and Olive raised seven biological and two adopted children. Stuart was working as a Linesman near Rosewood on the Darling Downs in QLD when he was killed by a falling telegraph pole. Olive died in Ipswich QLD in 1968
