Captain Cliff and the Truck
Cliff and his unit were going out to work on a destroyed road in New Guinea. As the trucks loaded up with men, Cliff as the Captain went to jump in the front cab with the driver. The driver hadn't been expecting his Captain to pick his truck and had already piled all his kit in the passenger seat. Don't worry, said Cliff. I'll jump in the back with the men.
On the way out to the job, the truck hit a land mine. The front passenger side of the truck was destroyed, but everyone survived. Cliff had major hearing loss but lived to the tale.
A story of chance, but also a story of an Australian who didn't make a fuss about his rank.
