Leonard joined the 9th Light Horse serving in Egypt. Among a list of ailments for which he was hospitalised throughout the period covering January to July 1916 were bouts of dysentery, rheumatism and debility. As a result of these ailments Leonard returned to Australia from Abbassia, Egypt on board H.T. Seeang Cheong on 17 July 1916 and was discharged as medically unfit on 31 October.
