Herbert was the second of seven children of Herbert Henry Buckby (born 1876 in Brisbane, QLD) and Charlotte Margaret Bottrill (born 1890 in Charters Towers, QLD). Herbert Snr- a Labourer - and Charlotte married in 1907 in Charters Towers, QLD. By 1913 the family was living in Dalrymple, QLD where Herbert Snr was a Timbergetter, and in 1916 they settled in Townsville, QLD where Herbert Snr worked as a Labourer.
Herbert was living in Townsville, QLD and working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the ACMF in January 1941. He served as a Private (Service No:Q11644) with 26th Infantry Battalion, and was Discharged in April 1942.
Herbert lived in the Townsville region (Ross) and worked as a Labourer until his Death in 1978.
