Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

TWO young men were killed instantly in a 40 m.p.h. death run down Long Hill, on the Kelvin Grove Road, at 7.30 last night. Their 3 1/2 ton army wagron crashed into a tramway pole and somersaulted three times into a 15ft ditch. The men were flung high into the air and landed 20 yards apart. They were: — John Evan Burnett, 23, married, with one young child, of Newmarket Road, Newmarket. Archibald Bruce Beattie, 25, single, of Bowen Street,
Windsor. Both men were civilian drivers attached to the Army Base Ordnance Depot, Gaythorne. One of the men was cut in half by the tramway pole as he tried to leap from the speeding vehicle. The other was hurled 20 feet
into the air and landed on his head on the footpath. The army waggon began its  fatal swerve 80 yards from where it came to rest.
Rolled into ditch
Within five seconds the waggon : Ploughed into a large pile of sand left on the roadway by City Council workers. Struck a heap of blue stone gravel 80ft. farther on. Glanced from the pole, tore down a barbed-wire fence and rolled into the ditch. The accident occurred near Herston Road. The truck came to rest inches from a private garage. Eye witnesses told police the driver lost control when he hit the sand heap. The smash was the second serious accident in Brisbane within 90 minutes last night.
