Benny was the seventh of eight choldren of Nicholas Burrows (born 1857 in Bendigo, Victoria) and Elizabeth Taylor Osgerby (born 1867 in Sydney, NSW). Nicholas and Elizabeth married in 1884 in Townsville, QLD and settled at Charters Towers where Nicholas was a Miner until his death in 1922.

Benny worked as a Shop Assistant in Charters Towers and Ayr, and in 1929 married Gertrude Amy Boyd (born 1911 in Prairai, QLD) in Charters Towers. Benny and Gertrude settled at Julia Creek, and Benny was working as a Store Manager when he enlisted in the ACMF on 12 April 1942 with his younger brother Herbert (Bert) John Burrows (ACMF, Corporal; Service No:Q222525). Benny was a Private (Service No:Q222538) attached to 21 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (QLD) when he was Discharged in October 1945.

Benny and Gertrude remianed in Julia Creek, QLD where Benny was a Store Manager until his death in 1955. Gertrude died in 1960.
