Bert was the youngest of eight children of Nicholas Burrows (born 1857 in Bendigo, Victoria) and Elizabeth Taylot Osgerby (born 1867 in Prairie, QLD. Nicholas and Elizabeth married in 1884 in Townsville, QLD and settled at Charters Towers where Nicholas was a Miner until his death in 1922.
Bert left school at fourteen when his father died and worked as a Labourer on a sheep station, a Messenger for a Dental Surgery, a Shop Assistant and Railway Fettler before he married Florence Mavis Turner (born 1914 in Ravenswood, QLD) in 1935 in Julia Creek, QLD.
Bert joined the Cloncurry Branch of the Railway Ambulance Brigade (St John's Ambulance Assn)at Julia Creek in 1932, and was a Railway Fettler at Nonda, QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF on 12 April 1942 with brother Benjamin (Benny) Edward (ACMF, Private; Service No:Q222538). Bert was a Corporal with 21 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (QLD) when he was Discharged in October 1945.
Bert and Florence moved to Cardwell near Tully, QLD where Bert was a Railway Fettler from 1948 to 1950, and in 1949 he was awarded an Honorary Instructor's Certificate. They moved to Townsville QLD in 1950 where Bert was a Stretcher Bearer with the Ambulance Transport Brigade - a job he had until 1970, and after retirement he was an honorary stretcher bearer until his death. Bert was one of three founding members of The Townsville Stampede - an annual rodeo - and was Secretary for sixteen years. He enjoyed rifle shooting, tennis and boxing, and died in Townsville in 1980. Florence died in 2009.
