Sidney William Bust QX40255 – Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Sidney Bust was born on 13 May 1905 at Maryborough, the son of Ellen Bust. Ellen married William Coe the following year.
When 37 year old Sidney enlisted in the 29th Infantry Battalion on 20 Apr 1942 he stated that his permanent address was c/- F. Shailer, Wooroolin. Probably Fred & Mavis Shailer! Sidney gave his mother Ellen Coe, Bundaberg as his next of kin. Sidney was transferred to the 19 Australian Field Ambulance in Aug 1942. His records are available of the NAA website but there no photo on him in the file.
The 19th Australian Field Ambulance was stationed in North Queensland where it carried out anti-malaria measures and treated soldiers suffering from tropical diseases. In June 1942, the 19th also provided medical support to the Australian force that made an ill-fated amphibious landing north of the Porton Plantation on Bougainville Island. Of the 15 medical orderlies from the 19th that landed at Porton, 3 were killed, 2 went missing, and 8 were wounded.
Sidney served in New Guinea at Merauke during 1943/44. He was discharged on 2 Mar 1944 and his address is listed a c/- Mr F. Shailer, Helen Siding, Gladstone.
Sidney lived in the Gin Gin area with other members of the Bust Family (Cousins & uncles). He died in 1973 and is buried at Gin Gin Cemetery. His memorial stone is blank.
