George was the fourth of five children of Thomas Harold Butler (born 1887 in Brisbane, QLD) and Elizabeth Jane McKeown Russell (born 1889 in Brisbane, QLD). George was a Apprentice Painter living in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1941, serving as a Private (Service No: QX44359). In 1942 he was ;in the Field' when he enlisted in the Australian Army, serving as a Private (Service No: 102039) in New Guinea with 106 Australian Casualty Clearning Station. He was Discharged in 1946.

Brothers - Thomas Vernon (Service no: QX20717) and Eric William (Service No: Q146090) - also served in WWII.

In 1942 in Brisbane, QLD George married Marie Florence Kathleen Fien (born 1923 in Brisbane, QLD). George and Marie settled in Brisbane, QLD where George worked as a Painter until his death in 1995, Marie died in 1983
