John was the third of four children of  Christopher Charles Cardinal (b1867 in London, England) and Ada Jamieson (b1875 in Cooktown, QLD). Christopher was two years of age when he arrived in Brisbane QLD in July 1869 on board the Young Australia with his parents and siblings. Christoper (a Painter) and Ada married in 1902 and by 1908 the family moved to Palmwoods near Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast where Christopher was a Farmer.

John started his working life as a Farmer at Palmwoods near Landsborourh on the Sunshine Coast and in 1936 married Doris Elizabeth Wickerson (b1912 in Nambour, QLD). The couple settled in Brisbane where John worked as an Accountant/Clerk and in May 1942 John enlisted in the Australian Army. He served as a Private (Service No:Q153606) in New Guinea (3 March 1944 - 30 May 1944) with 555 Light Anti Aircraft Battery, and was Discharged in November 1945.

Following his Discharge, John and Dorothy lived at Eight Mile Plains and Coopers Plains in Brisbane, where John worked as a Clerk/Accountant. The couple retired to Bli Bli near Nambour on the Sunshine Coast, where Dorothy died in 1981. John died in 1996.
