Biography contributed by Karen Standen

A native of England, Richard emigrated to Australia as a thirteen year old with his uncle and aunt, James Nelson Woof and Mary Ward Woof. The trio arrived in Hobart on the 6th July 1911 before settling in the Gippsland region of Victoria at Yarragon.

Five years later, almost to the day, Richard embarked in Melbourne with the A.I.F., 22nd Infanrty Battalion, 13th reinforcements. Arriving in France in November 1916, he was wounded in action the following May with a gun shot wound to the chest. It would be five months before he rejoined his unit.

Richard Woof was killed in action on the 6th July 1918 - his 7th year anniversary of calling Australia home.
