Gordon was the fourth of six children of James William Carswell (b1886 in Gympie, QLD) and Mabel Guard (b1890 in Gympie, QLD). James (a Miner) and Mabel married in 1914 in Gympie QLD where they settled and raised their family. James worked as a Miner and Labourer.

Gordon was a Butcher in Gympie QLD in 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF. He served with 32 and 198 Australian Supply Depot (ASD) Coys and was a Private (Service No:Q135483) when he was Discharged in August 1946. Sister Myrtle Gladys (Private; Service Nos:QFX55556/Q268463), Brother Stanley Jack (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:151882), Brothers-in-Law Colin Ray Chapman (Service No:QX63372) and Robert Edward Nobbs (Service No:QX37890) and Wife Dorothy June Hall (Private; Service No:NF480145) also served in WWII.

In 1947 Gordon was a Butcher in Sydney NSW when he married Dorothy June Hall (b1925 in Tumbarumba, NSW) - Dorothy had served with the AAMWS in WWII, Gordon and Dorothy settled in Sydney where Gordon was a Butcher. He died in 1982 and Dorothy in 2016.
