Ernest was the third of four children of Bartholomew (Bertie) Howard Foster Carvolth (born 1878 in Cornwall, England) and Mary Ellen Verrtan (born 1884 in Charters Towers, QLD). Bertie immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1891, arriving in Townsville, QLD on board the Jumna. He was a Drayman in Charters Towers, QLD in 1906 when he and Mary married. They lived in Charters Towers and Townsville, where Bertie worked as a Carter, Drayman and Storekeeper.

Ernie was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD in 1932 when he married Adina Catherine Melba Rossow (born 1910 in Ipswich, QLD). They settled in Ipswich and in February 1942 Ernest enlisted with the ACMF, He was a Private (Service No:Q266209) attached to General Details Depot when he was Discharged in March 1943.

In July 1945 Ernest and Adina divorced (with Adina granted custody of their five children) and Ernest relocated to Liverpool, NSW with Ivy May Green (born 1915 in Marburg, QLD). They married in 1947 and Ernest worked as a Boilermaker's Assistant before they separated in the early 1960s. Ernest was working as a Driver in the late 1980s when he married Violet Theresa Hubbard (nee Pickett, born 1927 in London). Ernest and Violet settled at Mt Druitt, where Ernest died in 1998. Violet died in 2012.
