Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Eric Clyde Cherry (Service Nos:QX236/Q302291/Q66156/QX24046/QX37198) served in the Army between 21 October 1939 and 8 August 1943. Private Cherry's longest term was from 16 October 1942 to 8 August 1943 when he was attached to 21 Infantry Training Battalion. Older brothers Sid and Percy served in WWI, and Les in WWII.

Eric was born in Warwick, QLD in 1906, eleventh of fourteen children of William Henry Cherry (b1864 in Windsor, Hawkesbury City, New South Wales) and Mary Ann Eldridge (b1870 in London, England) - Mary immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1874, arriving in Moreton Bay on board the Great Britain. William and Mary married in 1886 in Warwick, and lived at Thranes Creek and Rosenthral, in Killarney and in Warwick. William worked as a Labourer, a Drover in southern QLD/northern NSW and as a Farmer.

Eric worked as a Labourer and was a Relief worker in Brisbane in 1933 when he married Phyllis (Helena) Heinrich (b1915 in Brisbane, QLD). Eric and Helena settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Eric was a Relief Worker, Wood Cutter, Truck Driver and Storeman. Following his Discharge from the Army, he and Helena lived in Brisbane, where Eric was a Painter, and in the late 1940s Eric was in Adelaide, where he was a Painter and Decorator. Eric returned to Brisbane in the 1950s - he and Helena divorced and Helena remarried. Eric died in 1971.
