Leonard Pitt Ardill joined the 15th Battalion at the front during October 1916, took part in a raid at Gueudecourt on 1 February where he was wounded in both legs before rejoining his unit at the end of March 1917. He was wounded in action again at Bullecourt only 10 days later, and evacuated to England with a gunshot wound to the left hand. He rejoined the 15th Battalion in Belgium during September 1917.

Ardill was awarded a Military Medal for gallantry at Hebuterne, France on 27 March 1918, during the great German offensive.

He was awarded a Bar to the Military Medal for gallantry at Hamel on 4 July 1918 for silencing enemy posts and capturing German machine guns crews.

Ardill was returned to Australia in April 1919.
