John was the youngest of seven children of Michael Cleary Snr (born 1850 in County Galway, Ireland) and Catherine (Kate) Donohue (born 1863 in Gatton, QLD). Michael (a Farmer) and Kate married in Toowoomba, QLD in 1884 and settled in Gatton on the Darling Downs where they raised their family.

John was a Farmer at Forrest Hill via Gatton when he enlisted in the Army in July 1940. He was a Private (Service No:QX14067) attached to the Army Catering Corps when he was Discharged in July 1945. Brother Michael (Lance Corporal; Service No:4117) and Brother-in-Law George Waters (Private; Service No:3151) served in WWI.

In 1942 John married Ellen Mahaffey (born 1915 in Gatton, QLD) and they settled at Forrest Hill via Gatton on the Darling Downs, QLD where John was a Farmer untill the late 1950s. John and Ellen moved to Gatton where John was a Butcher. Ellen died in June and John in December 1978.
