Private John Lewis Coles (Service No:Q45922) served in the ACMF from 19 March 1941 to 21 June 1942 and was attached to Australian Army Services Corps (AASC) at Discharge.

Born in 1916 in Toowoomba QLD, John was the third of six children of George Francis Coles (b1885 in Brisbane, QLD) and Sarah Jane Seel (b1888 in Toowoomba, QLD). George (a Labourer) and Sarah married in 1910 in Brisbane, QLD and by 1915 were settled in Toowoomba where they raised their family  and George was a Labourer and Railways Employee. In May 1916 George enlisted in the AIF following pressure from two of his brothers - however Sarah objected on the basis of her ill health and two small children, and George was Discharged a month later (National Archives Australia).

John was a House Painter in Brisbane when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1941 - and married Ellen Davies (b1920 in Brisbane, QLD) - Ellen enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. John was a Carter in Brisbane in 1943 and the next year he and Ellen had separated - in 1947 Ellen advertised her intention to file for Divorce, notifying John and a Margaret McFarlane of proceedings to take place in Sydney. In 1980, John was living in New South Wales according to correspondence between the Army Records Office and DVA NSW (National Archives Australia).
