William was the eldest of five children of William Patrick Collins (b1881 in Gympie, QLD) and Ada Florence Guard (b1888 in Gympie, QLD). William Snr (a Miner) and Ada married in 1908 in Gympie QLD where they lived until 1912. The family moved to Crow's Nest on the Darling Downs and then to Murgon at Wondai where William Snr worked as a Ganger and Labourer. In 1930 the family relocated to Brisbane, where William Snr worked as a Ganger and Labourer.
William worked as Shop Assistant in Mondure and Tingoora in Wide Bay QLD and enlisted in the Militia in September 1939. He was a Private (Service No:420892) attached to 47 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged as medically unfit in January 1940. Brother Basil Patrick (Flight Sergeant; Service No:25290) served in the RAAF in WWII.
In 1941 William was working as a Shop Assistant in Wondai when he married Gladys Velma Boisen (b1912 in Wondai, QLD). William and Gladys settled in Wondai where William was a Shop Assistant before becoming a Storekeeper in the mid 1940s. William and Gladys retired to Brisbane in 1970, where Gladys died in 1995. William died in 1999.
