Sydney Roy Hewlett was born on the 25th of January 1895, in Southwark, South Australia. Before enlisting, Hewlett was a Draper's Assistant. He enlisted on the 6th of April 1916.  He had done 6 years of military service as a Senior Cadet, but then transferred to 76th Infantry for 9 years. He was still serving at the time of enlistment. His mother was Anne Eliza Hewlett, and his sister was Mrs Fred Shipp. His sister was his next of kin.

Sydney Roy Hewlett embarked on the 12th of August 1916. The place of embarkation was Adelaide. Sydney Roy Hewlett was 21 years old and 3 months. He was put in the 10th Infantry Battalion and his service number was 6073. The 10th Battalion had the rectangle shape (for their patch) and light blue and purple colours on their patch. He started off as a Private. 

On the 1st of October 1916, he marched in from overseas (to England). He was wounded in action on the 26th of February 1917 in France. During this time in France the 10th Battalion was in the small village of Le Barque.

On the 1st of March 1917 Sydney Roy Hewlett embarked for England. On the exact same day, it was recorded that he suffered a gunshot wound in the chest and thigh. On the 2nd of March 1917 he had trench feet. During this time in England the 10th Battalion did quite a bit of training and some parades. On the 30th of July 1917 he proceeded overseas to France from being in Perham Downs.

Then in Belgium he was wounded in action with a shrapnel wound affecting his thigh and right foot on the 20th of September 1917. On the 26th of September Sydney Roy Hewlett had a gunshot wound in left thigh and foot. In Belgium, the 10th Battalion was taking part in the Third Battle of Ypres, which was during July to November 1917.       

Sydney Roy Hewlett then was discharged on the 27th of June 1918 due to gunshot wound in left thigh, right foot, chest, and had trench feet. The disembarkation date was the 12th of June 1918.  All together Sydney Roy Hewlett served 2 years and 83 days and was abroad for 1 year and 305 days.

After returning to Australia Sydney Roy Hewlett got married. According to the ‘Observer’ magazine Sydney Roy Hewlett married Hilda Grace Morrison on the 15th of September 1927. Then on the 23rd of October 1928 Sydney Roy Hewlett’s daughter, Beth Geraldine, was born. In 1976 on the 24th of April Sydney Roy Hewlett died at 81 years old. The cemetery where he is buried is Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia.
