One of four brothers (George, Gordon and John) who served in WWII, Staff Sergeant Allan Thomas Conwell (Service No:Q28520) served with 61st Infantry Battalion - graded Clerk - from 13 August 1940 to 15 March 1946.
Allan was born in Nambour, QLD in 1920, third of eight children of Thomas (Tom) Conwell (b1888 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Mary Chadwick (b1889 in Lancashire, England. Tom (a Farmer's son) immigrated in 1908, arriving in Brisbane on board the Orotava, and Mary (a Cotton Weaver) arrived in Brisbane in 1913 on board the Omrah. Tom (a Farmer) and Mary (a Probationary Nurse) married in 1917 in Nambour, where they settled and raised their family and Tom was a Farmer. In the mid 1930s Tom and Mary moved to Brisbane and Tom worked as a Labourer.
Allan started work in Brisbane as a Clerk, and was an Accountant in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1941 in Brisbane, Allan married Jean Margaret Buchanan (b1919 in Williamstown, Victoria). Allan and Jean settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Allan was an Accountant and Company Manager, and a member of the Assembly of God (AOG) Executive (Treasurer). Allan and Jean retired to Caloundra, where Allan died in 2015 and Jean in 2016.
