Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Eldest of four brothers (Allan, Gordon and John) who served in WWII, Private George William Conwell (Service No:Q152141) enlisted in the ACMF on 27 January 1942 and was attached to General Details Depot (GDD) - graded Carpenter. Private Conwell served in New Guinea (17 January 1944 - 6 June 1944) with 1st Australian Advanced Reinforcement Depot (AARD), and was attached to 13 ACD at Discharge on 13 May 1946.

George was born in Nambour, QLD in 1919, second of eight children of Thomas (Tom) Conwell (b1888 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Mary Chadwick (b1889 in Lancashire, England). Tom was a Farmer's son when he immigrated in 1908, arriving in Brisbane on board the Orotava, and Mary was a Weaver, arriving in Brisbane in 1913 on board the Omrah. Tom (a Farmer) and Mary (a Probationary Nurse) married in 1917 in Nambour, where they settled and raised their family and Tom was a Farmer. In the mid 1930s Tom and Mary moved to Brisbane, where Tom worked as a Labourer.

George started work as a Apprentice Carpenter in Brisbane, and was a Carpenter when he enlisted in the Army in 1940. George married Adeline Heather (aka Heather) Neville (b1921 in Nambour, QLD) in 1942 in Brisbane, and following his Discharge from the Army, he and Heather settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and George was a Carpenter and Builder until his death in 1975. Heather died in 2003.
