Eldest of three brothers who served in WWII, Private John Edward Cooper (Service No:QX13384) served with the RNVR before enlisting in the AIF on 26 June 1940, and was attached to 1st Corps Troops Supply Column (CTSC) - Trade Group Driver Mechanic - on 27 December 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East. Private Cooper was attached to AIF Postal Unit in the Middle East, and on 18 September 1942 embarked for Sydney on board the New Zealand Star. In 1943 Private Cooper served with 1st Advanced Ordnance Depot and 2 Advanced Water Transport Group, and was attached to 1st CTSC at Discharge on 2 February 1944 (Medically Unfit).
John was born in Brisbane QLD in 1902, eldest of six children of Phillip Henry Cooper (b1877 in Warwickshire, England) and Amelia Jane Harris (b1881 in Brisbane, QLD). Phillip immigrated in 1887, arriving in Brisbane on board the Jumna. He and Amelia married in 1901 in Brisbane, where they settled (Fortitude Valley) and raised their family and Phillip worked as a Fruiterer, Dealer and Butcher.
John served with the Naval Cadets (Brisbane Institute of Social Service) from 30 June 1913 to 30 June 1916, then the Senior Cadets and the RANVR. In 1917 he was working in Brisbane as an Office Boy, and was a Motor Driver in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1940 in Brisbane he married Muriel Agnes Hayes (nee Bury; b1890 in Brisbane, QLD). Following his Discharge from the Army, John and Muriel settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and John worked as a Carrier/Motor Driver. John died in 1973 and Muriel in 1981.
