Youngest of three brothers (John and Bill) who served in WWII, Warrant Officer II Richard Henry Cooper (Service Nos:Q9258/QX43745) initially served in the ACMF as a Gunner with 5 Field Regiment from 25 January 1940 to 17 November 1942, and was a Sergeant attached to 1 Australian Tank Attack Regiment when he enlisted in the AIF on 18 November 1942. Promoted to Warrant Officer II on 13 April 1943, he served with 651 Light Anti Aircraft Battery and 2/2 Australian Field Regiment. WOII Cooper served in New Guinea (12 July 1945 - 15 December 1945), and was attached to 2/1 Tank Attack Regiment at Discharge on 3 January 1946.
Richard was born in Brisbane QLD in 1918, youngest of six children of Phillip Henry Cooper (b1877 in Warwickshire, England) and Amelia Jane Harris (b1881 in Brisbane, QLD). Phillip immigrated in 1887, arriving in Brisbane on board the Jumna. Phillip and Amelia married in 1901 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Phillip worked as a Fruiterer, Dealer and Butcher.
Richard was working as a Carter in Brisbane in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1943 in Cairns married Christina Birch (b1921 in Cairns, QLD) - Christina was working in Cairns as a Waitress. Following his Discharge from the Army, Richard and Christina lived in Brisbane, where Richard was a Labourer, before settling at Deception Bay in the early 1950s. Richard was a Metal Worker until retirement, and died in 2008.
