Born in 1916 in Maryborough QLD, Alec was the fourth of five children of Disney James Cran (b1884 at Yengarie, QLD) and Rose Beatrice Mortleman (b1888 at Gayndah, Wide Bay, QLD). Disney had worked as a Farm Labourer and Engine Driver at Biggenden and Mt Shamrock Mines, QLD and in 1909 was a Dairy and Cane Farmer at Tinana when he and Rose married in Maryborough, QLD. The couple settled at Bidwell Paddocks, Tinana where Disney was a Dairy and Cane Farmer, later entering into partnership with two of his sons.
Alec was working as a Farmer's Hand in Tinana in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, and in 1944 in Maryborough QLD he married Lillias Grace Parke (b1916 in Maryborough, QLD) - both Alec and Lillias grew up in Tinana and attended Tinana State School.
