Jimmy was the fourth of five children of John (Jack) Thomas Cross (born 1897 in Laidley, QLD) and Helena Martha Wegener (born 1893 at Ropely in QLD). Jack was a Farmer at Laidley in the Lockyer Valler in 1918 when he married Helena at Blenheim, QLD. Jack worked as a Farmer and Cafe Proprietor and raised the family at Linville, Yarraman on the Darling Downs in QLD.
Jimmy, a Labourer, enlisted in the Army at Glen Innes, NSW in May 1943 and served as a Gunner (Service Nos:QX55779/Q151503/Q268908). Jimmy was attached to 2/5th Field Regiment when he was Discharged in October 1946. The 2/5th was formed at Ingleburn, NSW in 1940, with most of the personnel coming from QLD. Gunner Cross served in New Guinea and Balikapan in Borneo. The Regiment was disbanded on 26 July 1946 (Guns and Gunners: The 2/5th Field Regiment in WWII by John W O'Brien).
Following his Discharge, Jimmy returned to Yarraman and worked as a Linesman on the Brisbane Line, and was a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD in 1954 when he married Phyllis (Phil) Mary Nama (born 1924 in Mapleton, QLD) at Maleny in QLD. Phil had served in the Army as a Signalwoman (Service No:QF270951) in WWII, and was a Bar Attendant in Fortitude Valley in Brisbane in 1954.
Jimmy and Phil settled at Paddington in Brisbane, where Jimmy worked as a Linesman and Phil as a Teletype Operator. Phil died in 2011 and Jimmy died in 2019.
