Lyal was the eldest of two sons of Henry Bartholomew Daley (born 1892 at Toppers Mountain near Tingah in NSW) and Elsie Ivy Ellenor Booth (born 1895 in Moree, NSW). Henry and Elsie married in 1914 in Inglewood near Ipswich in QLD, where Henry was a Teamster. They lived at Yarraman on the Darling Downs while Henry worked as a Teamster and by 1936 the family was living in Ipswich, QLD where Henry and his two sons were Butchers.

In 1937 Lyal married Irene May Molloy (born 1918 in Ipswich, QLD) in Ipswich, QLD where they were living with their two sons when Lyal enlisted in November 1942 in 1 Australian Army Ordnance Corps as a Private (Service No: QX51559). Brother Gordon, also a Butcher in Ipswich, was a a Craftsman (Service No: QX42190/Q128177) in the Army.

Discharged in March 1945, Lyal returned to Ipswich, working in Silkstone as a Butcher. By 1954 Lyal and his family had moved to Brisbane, QLD where Lyal was unemployed until the mid 1960's when he became a Storekeeper. Lyal died in 1968 and Irene in 1973.
