Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Herbert Arthur Darlington (Service No:Q208208) served in the ACMF with 10th Battalion VDC from 19 April 1942 to 21 October 1945. Two of Private Darlington's younger siblings - Peter and Bernard - also served in WWII.

Born at Waterloo via Bundaberg, QLD in 1906, Herbert was  third of eight children of Joseph Henry Darlington (b1867 in London, England ) and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Olsson (b1880 at Woongarra Scrub, Kalkie, QLD). Joseph immigrated in 1879, arriving in Brisbane on board the Ben Cruachan, and by 1886 was a Farmer on agricultural land awarded in the Littlebella Region. In 1901 Joseph was a Farmer at Waterloo via Bundaberg when he and Kate married at Battle Creek via Bundaberg. The couple settled at Enfield Farm, Littlebella Creek via Bunderberg, where they raised their family and Joseph was a Farmer. By 1911 the family had moved to Bundaberg, where Joseph was a Restaurant Keeper - in 1913 Joseph was admitted as an inpatient to Diamantina Hospital in Brisbane - where a Protection Order was granted to look after his interests - and where he died in 1929. Kate and the children remained in the Bundaberg/Gladstone Region.

From the mid 1920s Herbert was a Farmer at Palmwoods via Landsborough, moving in the 1930s to Takoka via Bundaberg, where he was a Farmer and Labourer. In the mid 1960s Herbert settled in Bundaberg, where he died in 1989.
