Sergeant Peter Reginald Darlington (Service No:QX2771) enlisted in the AIF on 20 November 1939 as a Gunner - graded Gun Layer. Gunner Darlington was attached to 2/3 Field Regiment RAA, serving in the Middle East (Greece and Crete) from 5 May 1940 to 18 March 1942. Promoted to Bombardier then Sergeant in 1943, he served in New Guinea (Aitape, Wewak) from 5 November 1944 to 20 September 1945, and was attached to 2/3 Field Regiment RAA at Discharge on 24 October 1945.
Peter was born at Boaga, Baffle Creek via Bundaberg, QLD in 1915, seventh of eight children of Joseph Henry Darlington (b1867 in Middlesex, England) and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Olsson (b1880 at Woongarra Scrub via Kalkie, QLD). Jospeph immigrated in 1879, arriving in Brisbane on board the Ben Cruachan, and by 1886 was awarded agricultural land in the Littlebella Region. Joseph (a Farmer) and Kate married at Baffle Creek via Bundaberg in 1901, and settled at Enfield Farm, Littlebella Creek via Bundaberg, where they raised their family and Joseph was Farmer. By 1911, Joseph and Kate had moved to Bundaberg, where Joseph was a Restaurant Keeper. In 1913, Jospeh was admitted as an inmate to Diamantina Hospital in Brisbane - a Protection Order was issued to protect his interests - where he died in 1929. Kate and the children remained in the Bundaberg/Gladstone Region.
From the 1930s, Peter worked as a Farm Labourer at Pheasant Creek via Wowan until he enlisted in the Army in 1939. Following his Discharge, Peter was in Adelaide, South Australia in 1945, when he married Jean Phyllis Daniell (b1924 in Adelaide, South Australia) - Jean was a Nurse in Adelaide and served in the RAAF (Aircraftwoman; Service No:114741). Peter and Jean settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family. By the 1990s they were living in Aspley, Brisbane, QLD - where Peter died in 1993 and Jean in 2003.
