Alan was the youngest of ten children of John Dickfos (born 1873 at Mt Walker in QLD) and Ellen Augustus Lawrence (born 1876 at Moggill in QLD). John. a Farmer, married Ellen in 1897 at Rosevale in QLD, and they raised their family in Coleyville and Degilbo in QLD.
Alan was a Carpenter and Joiner in Brisbane in 1942 when he enlisted in the CMF as a Corporal (Service No: Q122294) with 16 Australian Field Coy. In January 1943 he enlisted in the Australian Army and served as a Corporal/Lance Corporal (Service No: QX49525) with 16 Field Coy. 5 Field Coy and 4 Field Coy. Alan served in New Guinea (Merauke, Bougainville and Rabaul) and was Discharged in June 1946. Two of his brothers - Donald Richard (Service No: Q228002) and Colin Kenneth (Service No: Q189901), and Brothers-in-Law - Christopher James Fry (Service No: Q143301), Stanley Phillip Fry (Service No: Q116397), Harold Herbert Bird (Service No: 1766), and Max Arnold (Service No: QX46009) also served in WWII.
Alan married Myrtle Lillian Fry (born 1927 in Cairns, QLD) in May 1946 - Max Arnold was his Best Man, and Max's wife (Myrtle's sister) Lorna, was Matron of Honour.
Alan and Myrtle settled in Cairns where Alan worked as a Carpenter until the early 1970s when they moved to Brisbane for ten years, before returning to Cairns. Alan then worked as a Storeman, and died in Cairns in 2014/
