Frederick Herbert Bowman was born on April 8, 1897, in Port Augusta, a small regional town in South Australia. Bowman grew up with his father, Frederick George Bowman, and mother, Nora Haines. Frederick grew up with two siblings, a sister, Kathleen Leslie Bowman, and a brother, H. B. Bowman. His close family member included his beloved wife, Nellie Eva May Bowman, whom he married on the 11th of May 1915. His family moved to Adelaide when he was young, and he attended Nailsworth Primary School. Before enlisting in the war, Bowman worked as a gardener. He married Nella Eva May Guscott 11 May 1915.

Frederick Herbert Bowman enlisted in the AIF on the 11th of October 1915. He embarked 7 February 1916 on board HMAT Miltiades. He served in the Middle East and France.

He returned to Australia after the war and was discharged 30 June 1919.

Frederick Herbert Bowman is commemorated on several memorials: the Hope Valley & Highbury Heroes of the Great War Roll, Nailsworth Primary School Great War Roll of Honour, and the Tea Tree Gully Hope Valley Methodist Church and District Roll of Honor.
