James was the toungest of two children of James Dobbie Snr (born 1876 in Northumberland, England) and Rosetta Workman Beattie (born 1877 in Fifeshire in Scotland). James Snr was a Labourer in Bundanba, Iposwich, QLD when he married Rosetta in 1901. They settled in Bundamba where James Snr worked as a Coal Miner and Weighman.

James Roy was a Turner when he married Edith May Lancaster Richards (born 1908 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1930. In August 1942 James enlisted in Warwick, QLD in the Australian Army, serving as WOI until his Discharge in May 1945.

James and Edith divorced in July 1945, and James then married Johanna Wilhelmina Goos (born 1901 in Ipswich, QLD). Johanna was a Nurse, and served with the Australian Army Nursing Service CMH Redbank as a Lieutenant (Service Nos: QX41047/Q123258).

Moving to Townsville, QLD, James worked as a Fitter at the Bayview Hospital at Stanton Hill in Townsville, and Johanna continued Nursing. James died in 1968 and Johanna in 1978.
