Son of John O'Donnell and Magdelina O'Donnell of Bowraville, North Coast, NSW.

Commenced return to Australia on 13 March 1919 aboard HT Ulimaroa arriving in Melbourne on 19 April 1919 for onward travel to Sydney.

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

Post war James joined the RSS&AILA (now RSL) as a  member of the Uki Sub Branch.
