Private Neville Charles Dolby (Service No:QX27693) enlisted in the AIF on 6 February 1942 and was attached to 7 and 29 Infantry Training Battalions and 2 Ordnance Vehicle Park Wallangarra. Private Dolby served on Thursday Island (12 July 1942 - 6 January 1943) with 14 Garrison Battalion and Thursday Island Fortress, and in New Guinea and Borneo (Merauke, Morotai, Labuan; 7 January 1943 - 21 January 1946) with 62nd Infantry Battalion and 2/15 Infantry Battalion, and was attached to 2/15 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 21 June 1946. His father Ernest, his three brothers (Ronald, Colin and Wesley) and his wife Hazel all served in WWII.
Neville was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1922, fifth of six children of Ernest Robert Bowen Dolby (b1892 in Brisbane, QLD) and Charlotte Elizabeth Churton (b1892 in Sandgate, Brisbane, QLD). Ernest (a Carrier) and Charlotte married in 1914 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Ernest worked as a Carter. By 1940 the family was living in Manly, Brisbane, and Ernest was a Waiter when he enlisted in the ACMF. Ernest worked as a Salesman and Storeman in Manly and Wynnum. Charlotte died in 1956 and by the early 1960s Ernest had retired to Caloundra, where in 1978 he remarried to Fairries (Fay) Braden Cotter (nee Brown; b1919 in Goondiwindi, QLD). Ernest and Fay settled at Tingalpa.
Neville worked in Manly QLD as a Motor Driver/Carrier before enlisting in the Army in 1942. He was a Storeman and Packer in Manly in 1949 when he married Violet Rebecca Harvey (b1922 in Northumberland, ENgland) - Violet worked as a Machinist and served in the WRAAF. Violet had immigrated in 1926 with her parents and siblings, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Themistocles. In the 1950s, Neville and Violet lived in Bulolo, New Guinea, where Neville was Store Manager for Burns Philp (NG) Ltd. Returning to Brisbane in the early 1960s, Neville and Violet settled in Wynnum, where Neville worked as a Van Salesman and Clerk. Violet died in 1994 and Neville in 2007.
