Private John Hoskins (Service No:5708) enlisted in the AIF on 4 March 1916 and was attached to 6th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire on 3 July 1916. Following service on the Western Front, Private Hoskins embarked from England for Melbourne on 13 July 1919 on board HT Persic and was attached to 6th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 13 October 1919.
Jack was born in Dartmoor via Heyward, Victoria in 1897, fourth of eight children of Robert (Bob) Hoskins (b1857 in Bridgewater, Victoria) and Elizabeth McKinnon (b1866 in Dartmoor, Victoria). Bob (a Grazier) and Elizabeth married in 1887 in Dartmoor and lived there and at Mumbannar via Dartmoor where Bob was a Grazier and Labourer.
Jack worked at Mumbannar as a Labourer before enlisting in WWI. He returned to Mumbannar following his Discharge and was working as a Labourer in 1924 when he married Grace Eva Christian (b1895 in Willenabrina via Warracknabeal, Victoria). Jack and Grace lived in Warracknabeal where they both worked as Confectioners before settling in Beulah in 1928. Jack was owner of the Coffee Palace in Beulah until his death in 1966. Grace died in 1988.
