Son of William Thomas Quennell and Mary Quennell nee Bruce of Membrey Grove, Hawthorn, Victoria.

On 22 February 1919 Alfred married Phylliss Constance Hamilton in All Saints Church, King's Heath Worcester, England. Vicar Harold Sellon Watts officiated.

Commenced return to Autralia on 4 June 1919 aboard HT Bremen disembarking on 25 July 1919
