One of three brothers (Henry and George) who served in WWII, Sapper Egmont Horace Drews (Service No:Q76815) served in the ACMF with 55 Field Park Coy from 27 August 1940 to 19 September 1942 (Essential Worker - Sugar Cane Cutter).
Monty was born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1917, sixth of nine children of August Ernst Drews (b1879 at Eckertsberge, Germany) and Sarah Ovinia Gaffel (b1883 in Bundaberg, QLD). August immigrated in 1881 with his parents and siblings, arriving in Brisbane on board the Windsor Castle and living in Laidley before the family settled in Bundaberg. August and Sarah married in 1903 in Bundaberg, where they settled and raised their family. August worked as a Labourer and as a Dairyman, and was 'a keen athlete; and his sons are well known cyclists in the district' (Trove; 1938).
Monty worked as a Cane Cutter in Bundaberg, and was a professional cyclist with the Burnett Wheelers Club . Following his Discharge from the Army, in 1942 he married Beris Whittington (b1923 in Bundaberg, QLD) in Bundaberg, where they settled and raised theirf amily and Monty was a Labourer and member of the Burnett Wheelers Cycling Club - winning many races, and the Monty Drews Trophy Race was named in his honour (Trove; 1952). In the mid 1950s the family moved to Moore Park in Musgrave via Bundaberg, where Monty was a Farmer. Monty died in 1983 and Beris in 1987.
